About the artists :- Susan and Douglas Dalgleish are married and share their home in Edinburgh with their 20 year-old son, Edward, who has recentlyly returned from an extended visit to Canada.

After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art's degree course in ceramics, and between the commitments of parenthood, Susan and Douglas set up their Edinburgh ceramics studio in 1985, relocating the studio to larger premises in Morningside three years later.

As full-time practising Ceramic Artists, they specialise in the design and manufacture of ceramic tiles. Their work is completed on a 'to order' basis, each project receiving the personal attention of Douglas or Susan, or both.

Although their work has been installed in private homes in Europe, Australasia and North America, most projects have been created for local clients in central and southern Scotland. Two of their largest publicly commissioned works, selected through competitive design submission, can be seen in The Ayr Hospital, and Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art.

Susan and Douglas believe that ceramic art deserves a place in the everyday built environment within which we all live. As part of a kitchen, bathroom, fireplace, or public building, ceramic tiles should be designed and made to perfectly suit each location.

Such tiles will express the tastes of their users, while bringing together the qualities of functionality, durability and aesthetic satisfaction. Ceramic tiles used in this way express the uniqueness and 'sense of place' of the spaces where we live.

The ceramic tradition originated in pre-history, in most of the world's settled human societies. It arose as a local, practical technology, an adaptable response to evolving social needs. Traditionally the skills of the most talented ceramic practitioners has been recognised through the patronage of a social elite.

Susan and Douglas are pleased to have developed a more inclusive client list, which reflects all social sectors, encompassing aristocratic private customers, professional people, artisans and fellow artists. This list also includes local authorities, building developers, schools and public art projects within Scotland and further afield.

If you are not personally included already, Susan and Douglas would be pleased to add you to their list of satisfied clients.
